PHOTOS. Rural communities in the Catskills were among the hardest hit by Tropical Storm Irene, which turned main streets into rushing rivers and once-grand homes into splintered ruins when it barreled down on the region. As the flood waters recede, the lengthy cleanup begins — one Governor Andrew Cuomo said could cost the state $1 billion.

The back of Catherine Haber's house where water washed away the foundation and pushed mud several feet into her basement. She spent several days cleaning out the mud and is having a new foundation poured on Friday. A retaining wall must be put in place for the concrete to be poured or else her house will eventually collapse.
