Look | NYC Evacuation Zones

Friday, August 26, 2011 - 12:00 AM

WNYC

New York City's hurricane contingency plans are based on three evacuation zones: Zone A, Zone B and Zone C. The threat of flooding in these areas are different. To find out if you live in one of these zones, look at our map.

It took half day of talks, explanations and persuasion to evacuate my friend's stubborn babushka from zone A. -- Done now!

So, is there a number the elderly or disabled can call if they need assistance evacuating? And has the National Guard been called out to assist with that? If so, it should be publicized. if not, it should be done.

like somebody else here, my mom is on a zone border, but its a transition from zone a to zone c, just across the street.

so, from the worst to flooding only in a cat 3 or 4 on a direct hit, and its not uphill across the street. so, should she evacuate? what would you do?

one would think listeners could read too -
first - the map says NYC evacuation zones -Wchester and NJ are not part of NYC.

second -These evacuation zones have been ordered by the Mayor of NYC - Mr Bloomberg has no authority to order evacuations in Westchester or NJ

lastly - thanks WNYC - while it is the new entitlement mentality that anyone who helps a little has to be berated for not fulfilling every entitlement wish - you did a good service and gosh, those that are missing their wish list items will just have to google a little bit harder all on their own.

I've heard that homebound elderly are being transported, anyone know how I can have that arranged?? I've called 311 but it's busy and the elderly lives right by the beach.

Why, when the entire island has a zone A border, is Staten Island never mentioned in the boroughs that could be affected by Irene?

Zone B (barely) floor space for rent. Depending on Height, Weight and Girth. Extra for dogs. No pitt bulls.

altho I know what zone I live in, zone c-- thank goodness not in zone a-- however, I agree with others commenting about the color coding system. two of the colors are so close in color, it is hard to discern which is which. Perhaps this could be improved next time. Hopefully there won't be a next time, but one never knows. Stay safe to all... no matter what zone you live.

... if you separate out the the yellow or 'orange" and try to compare it to the key, it's hard to determine where the hell you fall!

Maybe I'm nutz!!

Someone help me out, here!

Why would you design this thing with similar colors??

The difference between, "Get the Hell Outta Dodge" and "Have Another Beer" is barely perceptible!!!

DUMB!

Well done, WNYC. Thank you for posting the evacuation zone map. The NYC.GOV site is swamped, so having additional sources is great.

Now, can you post tips on the cheapest place to buy a canoe? or a gondola?

Great map. But am I to assume that your listening area doesn't extend beyond the 5 boros? Extend the map to Westechester, Long Island and New Jersey! The hurricane's going to affect those places too!
