Bloomberg Says Victims' Families Get Priority in 9/11 Ceremony
Friday, August 19, 2011 - 09:20 AM
Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended the decision not to include most first responders in the official September 11 ceremony for tenth anniversary of the attacks this year.
The move has angered firefighters, police and others, but the mayor said space is limited, and a large turnout is expected from surviving family members of the deceased.
"We are planning something for first responders to say thank you, but the bottom line is for 10 years we've been doing this for families, and we'll continue doing this for families," he said. "They just get the priorities."
Another space at Zuccotti Park, on the opposite side of the World Trade Center site, will be made available for first responders and others.

All I can say is this.... If it weren't for the "first responders", there would have been a lot more families present.
They should be the first priority. They were, and still are, victims too.
All the politicians trying to show face. Make the list very basic when it comes to the politicians and people just trying to show face for the sake of it. I'm a realist and know room is limited, fit as many first responders as you can after the family members. I know you can't fit everyone but you should damn well try to cut all the unnecessary people to get as many people who should be there into the tribute.
"Surviving family members should be kissing the men's a s s es that saved the rest of the people in the tower. Surviving family members weren't in those towers."
Learn, To. Read.
Lemme repeat it for you. "Surving family members of the DECEASED get priority."
That INCLUDES family members of the responders/NYPD/FDNY that died.
Not EVERY FDNY/NYPD guy that wants to be there can. Who do you turn away? Family of people that died that day?
For the love of God who are you people that think that should happen?
"Bloomberg, you're an idiot! What about the families that lost "first responders" when they went into the towers to save others? Are those families NOT invited too?"
-_-. Just -_-. If they lost family in the attack THEY ARE INVITED. Jesus some people are just ignorant and fly off w/o facts.
Just curious Shawn. If room is limited who do they turn away? Family members of those who died (including NYPD/FDNY etc..)?
Families of those lost FIRST. End of story.
David, just stay in Miami and mind your Miami business. Just like Americans.....? Are you not an American? Were you there when it happened 10 years ago? Probably not, I'm guessing you were criticizing Americans and America then too. You are just as bad as Fran. He's basically saying oh hey we are going to have this big tribute but you aren't invited, but you guys can have your own thing somewhere else out of the way.
Are you all serious? Are you blind? There is a special even just for the responders, and it doesn't say none are invited. It said most. You can't just make room. They get their own ceremony, and I am sure they will be honored here too. Way to typical Americans and take someones words and twist them into what ever you want, and then complain about the made up world you created. Bravo.

Bloomberg, you're an idiot! What about the families that lost "first responders" when they went into the towers to save others? Are those families NOT invited too? You're a typical moronic politician! The FDNY and NYPD have just as much right to be there as anyone else! Even moreso in my opinion. You make me ashamed to be a New Yorker! Hope you've got another job lined up when your term is up!
Does he not realize Fire and Police are "Family"
Fran from Blackwood NJ .... please go shoot yourself in the head with a nail gun!
Just remember that Mayor, when YOUR house is on fire, or YOU need an emt medical assistance, or YOUR house is broken into. i hope they show you the same new york hospitality.
Perhaps if all the dignitaries/politicians stayed away, the first responders and the families of the victims could have a nice, quiet and much more meaningful memorial together.
When everyone else was running away from the chaos as fast as they could, the police and firefighters were running TOWARD it as fast as they could....some respect is due....
As a brother to a fire fighter as well as a corrections officer I am thoroughly disgusted by this act by Mr. Bloomberg. Yes the family members should be invited and yes those family members lost should be honored. But what you fail to realize sir is that if the first responders did not act with the bravery they showed on that harrowing day the death toll would have been much greater.
I would say you slapped the face of the NYPD and the FDNY. But the truth Mr. Bloomberrg is that you stabbed them in the back. Enjoy your time as mayor, it's surely going to end next election.
I'm outraged that the mayor would be allowed to disrespect those who risked their own lives 10 years ago. Way to show your respects for the Police, Fire, and EMS officials that were running toward the fiery wreakage to save lives, when so many were running away from the nightmare. If I recall that day correctly, which I'm 150 % certain, it was a crowded chaotic nightmare. Why in the world would you not invite those that were such an important piece to the puzzle 10 years ago? Worrying about whether people are crowded or not is ridiculous! - So history seems to be repeating itself, because I can also recall my great grandparents talking about when the Titantic went down in 1912. Many more lives could have been saved then, but because people were worried about being crowded on the life boats, many boats (made to hold 60 grown men) were dropped and sent out with as little as 10 passengers on board. Why is the major worried about being crowded? I'm pretty certain he won't be regardless, so who cares. It's a moment in American history that brought every Man, Woman, and child together as one. I'm disgusted with the major! How dare you!
The brave souls who saw that smoke rising that day, only had one thing on their mind, get in there, save lifes, get home, many of which didn't get to do the last one. And I am sick to my stomic that the fire, police, ems, anyone who rushed into that hell, lost friends and loved ones on that day, cannot go to the 10th anniversery of that tragic event, I may have only be 10 that day, hell, i'll admit that I wanted to watch cartoons then what was going on, but i soon knew, what was inportant. Bloomberg, this message is to you, invite the heros, or get out of office!
they didnt leave until they found everything person they could, andthere was plenty of room for the then, they came from all over on thier own time and stayed risking thier lives, they should be there, they stayed all night and there was plenty of room for them then.
Are you kidding me? I'm not even American and I know this is just wrong. It doesn't take a genious to say we'll make room for 1, non-management, representative from each firehouse, ems, and police station. Come on!! Make the room! Someone fire this twit, on principle.
Nice job Bloomberg, guess you just f$#cked your chances at re-election.
I'm sure he is talking about first responders that showed up to help out after, and of course those who want to pay their respects that were not there, but speaking as a firefighter the Mayor should understand one thing.... Once your in, your family.
According to Snopes, this garbage about the first responders not being invited to the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 is true. Those are the second people who should be invited, the first being the families and survivors. Maybe the mayor doesn't need to be there. I guess the mayor isn't interested in re-election but this move is suicidal.
Thank God for those who risked or lost their lives to help on a day that changed our lives forever. I would like to encourage the family members and the survivors to go join the first responders in the park across the street.
@Fran how sad and pathetic you are. How dare you speak of these men and women that put their lives on the line for us/you! I hope the police, ems, firefighters etc where you live know you feel this way about them. I wouldn't be so quick to respond to you if you needed help.
Fran from Blackwood, NJ is a c--t
Come on people. Where were the politicians when 911 happened? They weren't anywhere near the towers trying to help find anybody!! They need to realize all the first responders risked their lives to help these people and some even lost their lives! There shouldn't be any separate ceremony...let the politicians step aside!!!
It's a good thing there was enough room for the first responders when the attacks happened!
You MAKE room! they made time to show up that day. Shouldn't even be a question.
Apparently the MAYOR doesn't understand the brotherhood of the fire and police service. The first responders they don't have time or space for, re-live this day every day they get on a fire truck and go out to help total strangers. I'm sure the mayor and his fellow politicians will expect a speedier response time to their personal emergency then they would a regular citizen. Hmmmm only want them around when you need them, sounds like the problem faced by all first responders in the country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, This is totally unexceptable. I think all the Fire departments, Police and EMS in the US show up and shut down NY city....
Room for POLITICIANS, but no room for First Responders???? How wrong can these politicians manage to think, anyhow?
Families should move over to the area where First Responders are delegated, and let the politicians promote themselves to one another.
Well Fran, if your family is in a fire or at some disaster at some point in time I hope the police and fire dept cant get to them because of their egos are too big and get in the way. I'm sure you'll complain either way and be ungrateful for the men and women that risk there lives on the daily domestic and foreign.
this is for those nasty comments about "bowing down and kissing asses"~~ what is wrong with u people!!?? those men and women risk their LIVES to make sure our lives are safe!! stop and think before u speak!! and they should be there! alot of them lost "loved ones" in that ordeal, granted it may not have been blood related family, but family none the less!! have a little respect!!!!
Nobody should have to kiss anybody's ass... I am so sick of this idea that people should bow down and kiss the ass of those that serve in these lines of work.. The family should have this to themselves. As the mayor said there will be something planned for the first responders. they can have that all to themselves. With their egos nobody else would fit anyway.

The first responders weren't invited to help at 911 they just showed up. Something should be done for them too. Find room for them.
Surviving family members should be kissing the men's a s s es that saved the rest of the people in the tower. Surviving family members weren't in those towers.
Glad at least one politician in the USA has the balls to keep it real.
that is such bs the real heroes where the first responders didnt see the family members up there risking hteyre lives to find surviorers
