Students Rally Against Behavior of School Safety Officers
Tuesday, September 07, 2010 - 07:24 PM
A day before classes begin, dozens of students rallied outside the Department of Education to protest against the behavior of school safety officers. Tenth-grader Angie Hernandez was one of several speakers who say officers talk down to students, and assume the worst.
"They treat us like criminals, that ain't right," she said. "They treat us like animals, that ain't right. And we ain't gonna take it anymore."
Demonstrators called for the passage of the Student Safety Act, which would require the DOE to disclose the number of students who are suspended, expelled or arrested. In response, the DOE says it's working with the council on the legislation, and that crime has been going down in schools.
