Opinion: Now What Happens to Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich?

Saturday, April 14, 2012 - 06:00 AM

Republican presidential candidate, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), waves to supporters after speaking at his primary night campaign rally on January 10, 2012 in Manchester, New Hampshire. (Andrew Burton/Getty Images/Getty)

Rick Santorum has suspended his campaign. For most of us that means he’s out of the race and it’s all over except for Romney reaching the 1144 delegates needed for his official nomination at the August party convention.

But, Santorum is not talking like he’s actually ”dropping out” of the race. He’s not being gracious about Mitt Romney, saying that Romney does not represent the values of the voters who supported him, Rick Santorum.

Tony Perkins, leader of the Family Research Council is holding the feet of the National GOP to the fire. He won't say that he’ll vote for Mitt Romney. Instead, he says he will push for “healthy families,” code language for opposition to gay rights and gay marriage.

Newt Gingrich is still pretending that he’s running for president even after losing all but a couple of primaries. He is out of money and has a huge outstanding debt. He’s despised by the Romney team for the snarky attacks and criticisms he’s launched against the former Massachusetts governor. He fired most of his campaign team.

Ron Paul is still slogging along accumulating a few delegates here and there, but it's unclear why he’s sticking in there. He claims it’s so he can advocate for the policies he has always expounded – a much leaner federal government, freedom, and a less imperial foreign policy.

The suspension of Santorum’s campaign has been correctly declared to be the start of the national election campaign pitting Mitt Romney against Barack Obama. But, there will be a strong sideshow inside the Republican Party as the various characters and factions especially Rick Santorum try to position themselves for the next seven months. And, let’s be clear, Santorum and Tony Perkins will try their best to continue yanking Romney to the right.

"Ron Paul is still slogging along accumulating a few delegates here and there, but it's unclear why he’s sticking in there."

You mean like sweeping the delegates in Missouri last week, or winning the majority of delegates in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, and Washington?

Let me guess - you're one of those "journalists" who just reads the AP feed every morning and thinks of a way to repackage what they are saying.

If you'd like to learn how a *real* journalist works, google "Reality Check with Ben Swann" on youtube. He actually spent the time to research the delegates rules in each state, and then asked around to figure out how many delegates were *elected* for each candidate, rather than taking the old AP projections which were already wrong after just one state! LOL

It is difficult to understand how a man so obviously academically qualified for the position here can be so blind. Have you seen anything on the internet? You are so very much out of touch with the American people that an Australian like me thousands of miles away can see far more than you both the malady with your country and the only popular candidate who has any real chance of fixing it. Is someone paying you to write such one-sided twaddle?

Ron Paul is "still hanging in there" because he is hoping that sooner or later the American people will recognize a few basic realities:

Peace is cheaper than war. It saves money and lives, and greatly reduces the ill will that perpetuates those costly actions.

We, as a nation, are burying ourselves (and future generations) in debt. That action concentrates wealth into fewer hands.

We acquire that debt by spending more than is collected in revenues. Shouldn't we be eliminating redundant agencies that account for billions in spending (and have virtually nothing to show for it - think Dept. of Education here.) before raising taxes, to make up for the deficit?

Legislating morality doesn't result in higher morals, it only creates a new class of criminal, and the costs associated with such. Morals are best tempered by the consequences of those morals.

Of the remaining presidential candidates, only Dr. Paul has been consistantly outspoken on these issues. Romney and The President are both financed by the same people who have profited the most from our economic condition. Ron Paul is financed by the American People, the same people who foot the bill. Foreign policy? The Armed Forces, the people who have to live with our foreign policy, overwhelmingly support Dr. Paul's philosophy. America has clear choices - more of the same, or something new. Frankly, I'm interested in how this comes out...

Just look at the title of this writer. It says "Professor of Political Science".

What more explanation do you need to explain how clueless he is? These are the same "Political Science" professors who've created the left/right myth, fooling sheep into believing that the 2 major parties are distinctly different parties. They want to desperately continue propagating this myth, so their profession would be able to hold onto their useless jobs pulling sheep wool over the sheep's eyes.

Wow, after reading this article, then reading through the comments, I'm quite entertained. It's 21-1. With 21 people describing how ill-informed this writer is on important facts. You'd think he'd want to respond to that...

My favorite comment was the one describing that very few U.S. journalists actually research much of anything. Instead just regurgitating the same words other journalists write - and much of that seems to stem from the Associated Press. With the internet, endless research capabilities, you'd think we would have way more different stories to inform us. But it's the same simple storyline almost every time.

Definition of Journalist: Someone who reports the facts to the people. Are you bought and paid for Steffen Schmidt? Or are you just stupid lazy idiot? We out here are awake and take the time to research for a meaningful truth on who we want to make big decisions for our country! So Steffen Schmidt...STOP writing publicly about a subject you are not qualified to write about. And any person or corporation in the position to inform the masses incorrectly should be disbarred and punished for their high crime. Oh that's right Journalists don't have to be licensed...like a Doctor or Lawyer. Maybe they should be licensed so when they do wrong, the people can be protected from them.

Love how your title says "it's a free country" and then you spew the ol slave rhetoric. Heres a newsflash for you. You just made the shill list!
What is the shill list? Everyone one of you rotten, jaundiced yellow journalist are going to find out soon enough!
As I see it, there is a battle raging as we write. We have the enemies of the republic in command of our troops, agencies, and law enforcement. They are passing blatantly unconstitutional laws, writing tyrannical Executive Orders, suppressing our petitions in court to address their tyranny. Drafting “laws” forbidding us to oppose them, importing foreign troops for use against us, and placing armored assets around the country for use by them to kill or control us.
Ron Paul 2012!!!

If Ron Paul is not elected, and the next Commander in Chief decides it's time to send more of our young men and women off to die on foreign soil, we will have to remind all of these low life Journalist that the blood is on their hands.

Are you juicing me with this piece? RP is the only guy worth my vote and to say he is "slogging along" shows how ignorant this writer, dare I say journalist is. Whens the last time you heard anyone speak passionately about Mitt or Rick? NEVER. Ron Paul unites people and has funding to take us all the way.

Apr. 14 2012 12:21 PM

Journalism is truly dead. What will become of the Status Quo as more and more people realize that the news is full of fabrications, and lies. The media has had far to much impact on the daily lives of our citizens. And now to see how they have blatantly done there best to steer this election, is unforgettable, it is unforgivable.

If by still slogging along, you mean picking up momentum and winning 167 delegates within the past week, then yes, he's slogging along pretty damn well. Texas is right around the corner, be interesting to see if he takes his home State. It will put him at around 350 to Romney's 600. Many more States just around the corner.

Newt will continue to be a tubby hypocrite with ethics violations on his record and a moon-colony goal.

Ron Paul will continue being the champion of the constitution and the only candidate worth my vote. I will write in Paul's name on my ballot because I understand that Goldman Sachs is funding both Romney and Obama and they benefit from either candidate. ONE CHOICE IS NO CHOICE. Ron Paul 2012

unbelievable drivel. last I heard, right around half of delegates are still to be won. santorum is out. gingrich is out (of money). what's his name still is heavily financed by all of the banksters... and Ron Paul is still adequately financed by hundreds of thousands of people. what happens when all of the people who refused to support Romney are left with Ron Paul as their last option? do you suppose they will lose their spine like Romney has so many times in the past and become Romney supporters? if this becomes an issue of Israel (which it is and will continue to be), then we have to ask a simple question: when was the last time Israel spent more than a week or so to annihilate an adversary? Israel is doing just fine on their own and if we would step out of their way, then Israel would probably take care of the Iran nuclear "threat" in fairly short order.

Good lord!!! What has happened to journalism?? Mr. Schmidt, Did you do ANY research at all before you wrote this mess? Ron Paul has been drawing HUGE crowds wherever he goes. Even CBS News recognizes that Mitt Romney is NOT likely to rack up the necessary delegates prior to the GOP convention. If an election is about IDEAS then Dr. Paul is the winner. If an election is about media & money then yea, Romney is out front.

BTW the latest polls show Ron Paul BEATING Pres. Obama while Romeny loses to him!!!! Think about that!!

David..... Dr Schmitt most likely does understand the delegate process. He seeks to obscure it. Plainly he has a agenda.

All of you "journalists" are just relying on what other "journalists" are saying. You have not got up off your lazy a$$es and truly investigated or even used the basic "who, what, when, where, why and how" lessons we learn in third thru fifth grade English/writing classes. Foreign journalists give a much more accurate and professional journalistic view of what goes on in America than the "copy and paste" hacks the masses are force fed here in the states..

I wonder how long can they quiet down media about Ron Paul. Look at some big main stream media sites - there is almost nothing about him. Only some no-saying words here and there.

Just wondering.. what the.. is going on in USA

Ron Paul is still "slogging along" because he actually has FAR more delegates than is reported by the mainstream media. About twenty-five percent of the delegates are --> unbound <--, which means that they can vote for whomever they wish. Most of these delegates are Ron Paul supporters.

So long as Mitt Romney doesn't get the magic number of 1144 delegates (and he won't), then a brokered convention will happen. That's when things get interesting...

Ron Paul has a good chance of securing the nomination, despite all the marginalizing by the media. I'm just surprised that someone who claims to have a doctorate in political science doesn't know what unbound delegates are or how they will affect this nomination. It takes some random internet guy like me to explain that this is NOT the first time a brokered convention has happened in our history. Ron Paul is going to walk into that convention "Like a Boss" and secure it with the help of his strong base of patriotic men and women who have worked hard to become delegates.

When the second convention ballot is cast and EVERYONE becomes unbound, get ready for the coolest presidential debate in history, as Ron Paul destroys Obama in the debates, secures the presidency, and saves this country from financial oblivion.

..."Ron Paul is still slogging along accumulating a few delegates here and there"...really? Most of the delegates haven't been chosen yet. I'm so tired of "pundits" trying to stear the electorate...they remind me of the politicians who have ruined our country. The only candidate who represents real change is Dr. Paul, like it or not. If you think that this once great nation is on the right track, then by all means vote for one of the "frontrunners" - just don't be surprised to be debating the same problems 4 years from now.

Steffen,

This piece is so bad that you have me wondering about a new conspiracy theory which is that the Main Stream Media (MSM) has be infiltrated by people like yourself who purposefully put out trash like this article to ward off what few followers/believers in the MSM that are left. Kinda like you're a double agent for the people who would like to see a return to real investigative journalism.

I'd suggest you start working on a really extra stupid piece in preparation for when the REAL delegate numbers for Ron Paul and Romney start coming out. That might be your really big chance to completely discredit the rag you infiltrated.

Keep at it, Steffen ol' buddy... you're the man!
