For a new schools chief, a new NYT education reporter

Wednesday, November 24, 2010 - 02:13 PM

Cathie Black isn't the only new person on the education scene.

Among the New York Times reporters who have converged on the coverage of the prospective new schools chancellor is Fernanda Santos, who had been covering Queens since leaving the City Hall beat.

I bumped into Santos on the F train recently and she confirmed she's moving over to to the education beat full-time. (Today she's out with a story about News Corps' jump into the education business.) Santos is taking over for Jennifer Medina, who is heading out to California for the Times.

Also covering education for the Times is Sharon Otterman.

The Times has some particularly in-depth coverage of Black, the mayor's controversial pick to run the school system. Her predecessor, Joel Klein, had his supporters in some education circles, but was never seen as his own best spokesman. Black, who comes from the publishing world, seems equipped to excel where Klein couldn't.

Fernanda Santos is a great reporter - I'm glad she will be covering such an important beat!
