What were the signs and symptoms of influenza in 1951? Join Dr. Naltoney to find out.
Not much has changed in the last 60 years when it comes to advice about staying healthy. According to Dr. Naltoney, in this 1951 WNYC broadcast, "the best thing we can do now is to take the ordinary precautions against cold which is always sensible this time of year." He offers these tips to avoid getting sick.
1. Stay away from people who have colds or the flu.
2. Dress warmly in cold weather and avoid becoming wet or chilled.
3. Keep your natural resistance up by eating wholesome nutritious foods.
4. Get enough fresh air, exercise, and rest.
Author's Note: Wondering what the intermittent tone is on the recording? In the early 1950s, it was illegal to broadcast live telephone interviews, although taped playbacks were OK. Stations would insert "beep" tones every 15 seconds so that the caller knew he was being recorded.
