9/11 Music

September 11, 2006

Below is the music from today's show we played to reflect on the five year anniversary of September 11. After receiving a number of suggestions from listeners, we settled on these songs.

"Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley (written by Leonard Cohen)
"Teardrop" by Massive Attack
"If It Be Your Will" by Antony (written by Leonard Cohen)
"Star Spangled Banner" by John Freund (Brian Lehrer Show listener)

Here's the email we received from John:

My wife and I were supposed to begin our first ever European vacation on Sep14. We decided to get out of town even if we couldn't go to Europe. We found ourselves in Harwichport, Cape Cod...coincidentally this was the town where my family had spread my father's ashes into the Atlantic 15 years (almost to the week) earlier.

We found "The Clapp House", a B&B that had a piano (a requirement for me) and a Hammond organ (an extra bonus surprise because that's my main instrument) and spent the week walking, biking and staring at the TV.

I had conceived this version of the national anthem prior to 2001 because I had a sense that our nation was in crisis even then. And every night during our trip, I sat down at the piano at the B&B and worked out the arrangement while grappling with the barrage of conflicting emotions I had. The owner had been listening and said that I should record it. So I whipped out my mini-disc recorder and captured this version it there and then on Sept. 19.

My band, Bigger than a Breadbox, insisted that we use it as the "secret song" on the album we released the following year, despite the fact that it sounds nothing like anything else we do.

Recording this quelled any microscopic intent I had to write a "Sep11 song" as it captures my feelings (and other's apparently) perfectly and the piano was suitably rickety.

One last thing. That horrible event has been used for some very noble and some very disgusting causes. Personally, I could never see it as a call to arms, but as a call to the world to find ways to put them down.

Thanks for listening.
"John in Ridgefield Park"
