Minor Major

August 28, 2006

We received numerous listener emails about today's segment proffering career advice for college students and recent graduates. Here's what a few listeners had to say:

Subject: Graduate
As a philosophy major, women studies minor I thought myself a pretty enlightened guy. However I made the mistake of looking with disdain on all the people taking classes in the business school. I therefore never took an economics or statistics class. That was a big mistake, not just professionally but intellectually. I found that I could participate only partially in serious social and political discussions after graduation. To all of today's liberal arts majors, I would encourage you to take an economics class.--D.

Subject: college majors
An english major says: use your college years to find out what you love; and make sure you read and write VERY WELL - once you're on the job market, you will find ways to use it. --J.

Subject: Advice to new college students - look for great teachers and great environments
What matters most in college are your experiences and relationships. Beware of mediocre teachers and lack-luster work environments. If you have a specific major in mind, make sure there is at least one top-notch professor in that field. If you don't know what you want, than make sure that the setting will be inspiring or provide a lot of opportunity to interact with new people and ideas. --M.

Subject: Current College Discussion
...Tell prospective students to not let grades or assignments get in the way of "life" lessons. Go to a lecture or a reading rather than study that one night. Or get a radio show and play the music that you love for two hours some morning, regardless of how tired it might make you. Don't get so caught up in your grades; future employers will be able to see your passion and well-roundedness. --J.

Subject: Interesting Site for College Majors - from Lehman College
In an attempt to assist my nephew who is undecided in terms of a major,
I found this website from a search. This is from Lehman College:
What can I do with this Major? --J.

Subject: College majors
As a history major who went back to graduate school, I am much happier
living in my basement apartment in Jersey, eating Ramen noodles at age
26, than I ever was at my horribly boring, but well paying, job for an
education policy think tank.
--K.

Gray Divorce (but no Gray Hair)

August 21, 2006

We got a few emails about today's segment on divorce and break-ups among older adults. Here are a couple:

My parents divorced after almost 49 years, both in their 70's. There were many factors, but I can tell you that my mother wanted to leave my father in 1968, and should have then, but was not comfortable with the thought of being a single mother at that time, in the society of the time. One issue was, for example, that the term "day care" was not even invented. So later on, as money issues became more critical and she knew she needed to protect her few assets from him, and as she knew society would not look at her askance and that my sister and I would help her if she needed it, she finally did it. --S.

to the lady who wanted to tell her children about the father's girlfriend, tell HIM he must tell them or else she would. it's his decision to split, it's his responsibility to tell the kids the truth. i've been there and done that! --E.

Also, to everyone tuning in for the "Shades of Gray" segment on hair dye we promoted for today's show: Tune in later this week. It was pre-empted by the President's press conference.

More on "The Israel Lobby"

August 03, 2006

Today's guests Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer have written a controversial article about the influence of The Israel Lobby. It generated many responses, including a scathing attack by Alan Dershowitz and these two articles that look at the influence of AIPAC, the chief pro-Israel lobby, in-depth: one by Michael Massing in The New York Review of Books and another by Glenn Frankel in the Washington Post.
