Menendez Says Bill Allows Undocumented People to Earn Citizenship

Monday, January 14, 2013

As the White House crafts its proposals to overhaul the immigration system, a bipartisan group of senators has also been meeting to draft up its own comprehensive reform bill.

New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez is part of that effort and spoke to WNYC about the issue that is expected to be a priority for the White House and new Congress as President Barack Obama calls for a path to citizenship for an estimated 11 undocumented immigrations in the country.

"It will have a pathway to earn legalization for those individuals who are undocumented in the United STates in which they would have to come forth, register with the government, go through a criminal background check, pay taxes, learn English and earn their way as they wait at the back of the line," Menendez told WNYC.
