Across the City
-Volunteer:
The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers 16 or older to work 12-hour shifts at local New York City shelters. Need to be able to carry 50 lbs. Go here for more info and application.
Catholic Charities of New York is also looking for volunteers interested in the long term Sandy recovery efforts. You can sign up here.
A spokeswoman for Food Bank for New York City says the group needs over 100 volunteers a day at its main headquarters, which includes a warehouse and kitchen. The group is also working to place volunteers in areas that need them, and collecting non-perishable food donations, such as cereal, canned fruits and vegtables, peanut butter and water, for distribution. They ask volunteers to register online.
The Hurricane Sandy Relief Kitchen is a community-based relief effort that is preparingand delivering food and cleaning and personal supplies to the Rockaways, Staten Island, Gerritsen Beach, Coney Island and other areas. They need volunteers to help prepare and portion hot meals, make sandwiches, and assist with driving deliveries to their sites.
New York Cares is registering volunteers online. Create an account and sign up for projects at their Sandy Disaster Response site. Executive director Gary Bagley says that the organization is posting neighborhood canvassing, food distribution and debris cleanup projects daily.
NYC Service is matching volunteers with opportunities to help. Visit their web site for more information.
Occupy Sandy has volunteer and donation sites listed by neighborhood. The main volunteer site is located at at the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew (520 Clinton Avenue, between Fulton & Atlantic) in Clinton Hill accepting volunteers and donations. 9am – 9pm. They are also running a kitchen in Bay Ridge at St. John’s Episcopal Church serving meals for various relief hubs in Rockaway and State Island. They are accepting food and kitchen donations only at this site and need kitchen and driver volunteers daily from 8:30am – 6pm. Team Rubicon, an organization comprised of veterans of the armed forces, is conducting Operation Greased Lighting, collecting money and organizing volunteers for Sandy relief.
The United Way of New York City is also looking for volunteers. You can fill out a Recover Volunteer Interest Form here.

If shopping is your thing, a group of shop owners, internet retailers and businesses is holding Sandy Friday - a movement to get organizations to dedicate 10 percent of their profits every Friday.
Craft Emergency Relief Fund is an organization that supports artists through financial aid. To donate to those affected by Hurricane Sandy, visit their donation page.
To attend a charity concert, event or meal, you can find a list of restaurants, clubs and music venues hosting Sandy Relief efforts here.

If you would like to help out with animal rescue and fostering, pet food donation or volunteering at animal shelters in NYC, visit the Mayor's Alliance for NYC Animals. Park Slope Armory is an emergency shelter in need of volunteers and donations. In particular, they need overnight volunteers and donations of men's and women's clothing, sizes L, XL, XXL.
Red Hook:
Red Hook Recovers is connecting volunteers and givers in the Brooklyn neighborhood.
The Red Hook Initiative is collecting toilet paper, water, candles, food, flashlights, cell phone chargers, batteries, paper towels, and paper for printers. If you plan to bring a meal, send an email to food@rhicenter.org

Lower East Side Recovers is an effort to match volunteers and givers with people who have needs in the Lower East Side, coordinated by the folks at Occupy NYC and community organizations on the ground.

Soho:
The Soho Grand has an outreach for displaced victims of the storm and are asking for donations at the hotel.
Upper East Side:

Lava Girl Surf Club is coordinating donation and relief efforts out of the Rockaway Beach Surf Club - mainly looking for donations and volunteers.
Occupy Sandy Relief has been collating drop-off locations, volunteer info and requests.

Rockaway Renegades are a group of organized volunteers who are working on cleanup efforts and distribution of goods.
Shore Soup aims to provide Rockaway residents with free hot soup everyday. They're looking for donations and volunteers to help cook and distribute food every week from Wednesday to Sunday.

Sunnyside:
The Restaurants United for Sandy Help - R.U.S.H. - is hosting a fundraiser for the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy called Taste of Sunnyside - featuring local restaurants, a concert with three bands, raffles, trivia, and a DJ for children attending, with all the proceeds going directly to licensed nonprofits/churches/organizations on the afternoon of Nov. 18th at Sunnyside Community Services located at 43-31 39th St.
NEW JERSEY:
Community Food Bank of NJ is seeking food donations - call 908.355.3663 or visit the website to find out how and where to give.
Jersey Cares is coordinating volunteers with opportunities near them. Sherry Fazio, with NJ Cares, says the most important thing to do is register with their website to help in the coming weeks as projects look for help. If her family is any indication, she expects water, blankets and non-perishable food will be items requested in the days to come.
An emergency response hotline: 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397) - they're looking for trained volunteers who are affiliated with an emergency response organization to volunteer their services. Gov. Chris Christie's office says the hotline is getting an overwhelming response, so another number to try is 609-218-0460.
LONG ISLAND:
The Long Island Volunteer Center is registering volunteers.
The Town of Oyster Bay is holding a clothing drive that continues until 5pm on Sunday. Donations can be brought to three locations: Marjorie R. Post Community Park, Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, and Oyster Bay Community Center.
WESTCHESTER:
Food Bank for Westchester is accepting donations of food to help area residents without power. Check the website for a detailed list.
The Volunteer Center is coordinating volunteer and relief efforts. The website also includes a list of places in Westchester accepting donations and help.
Federal Government:
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says the president's disaster declarations in parts of New York and New Jersey following Hurricane Sandy could free up loans and grants to homeowners and small businesses. Relief may also include unemployment and other payments, to residents who are not covered by insurance, or aren't already receiving benefits from their states. For more information, and to find out if they're eligible, residents can log on to disasterassistance.gov, or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekdays and weekends.
General volunteering:
Give Blood: The New York Blood Center says it was in need of blood even before the storm, but the storm has made the need greater. Five locations are currently open: in Midtown at 601 Lexington (the Citigroup building), in the Upper East Side on 67th Street between 1st and 2nd Ave, at the Elmsford Center in Westchester County, and the East Fishkill and Kingston Center, both located in the Hudson Valley.
In Northern New Jersey, the Community Blood Services in Paramus is the place to donate. Platelets also urgently needed.
Give Clothes: The shelter at FDR High School in Midwood is outfitting people who got stuck near the Gowanus Canal.
Give Service: People are being directed to sign up at NYCService for volunteer opportunities. Food Bank of New York is open and distributing food. It has also been in contact with agencies it supports to find out need. With the opening of the bridges and tunnels, it says it will be able to get trucks in, but recommends going to its website for how to help.
Food not bombs is looking for volunteers to help set up staging areas in the the city to help prepare meals on site. For more information, go here.
House the Displaced: The online service Airbnb is waiving fees on discounted Sandy listings. You can offer extra rooms in your home for those displaced by the storm on their website.
Follow the Hashtag: #sandyvolunteer has become the unofficial hashtag for those looking to volunteer and those looking for help.
Finding Family or Friends
With problems in the cellphone networks and the power outages, The Red Cross has set up a registry for people looking for friends and family or wanting to send a message to friends and family that they are safe.

I'm a long time journalist, trained and worked as a medic, ex-military -- I worked for OEM NYC during Irene and during Sandy; then I went out on my own. Was in shelters, command centers, projects from Coney Island to Chinatown. There's good work being done but there are a lot of logistical, avoidable problems, and there a lot of unmet needs that are fairly easy to remedy if people coordinated (actually the govt. agencies need to do that more than the private citizens who were doing real good). Wrote a couple of accounts about this, inks above, think they're instructive, maybe useful, definitely newsworthy and I wish people in charge would listen.

My family survived hurricane Ike. We lost the bottom floor of our home. Recovery takes a long time. I would like to pass on what I learned after a two year battle. What people need to know now as they are cleaning out their homes is to take pictures of everything for insurance claims. Take pictures of every single item you throw away. Take pictures of serial numbers and brand names. You will need to fill out a list of every item for your claim. You need the item name item description, cost, and when you bought it for your claim. If you do not have receipts then you will need to go on the internet and look up the item. Print off the page with a picture of the item and the cost. Keep this information for each item and include it your claim. I was asked questions like , How do we know you bought these items and did not take tem from a neighbor for your claim? How did you pay for those items? Etc. Dont worry about those thoughtless questions just continue to work on your claim. If your adjuster is rude or thoughtless ask for a new one. Whatever you do dont throw away your items without pictures because it is so hard to remember everything you had. You are entitled to claim every single item you lost no katter how small. It all adds up. You can only depend on yourself and God.

I just got back my power about and hour ago I wish I never lost it because I wanted to be the house that could take others in who were in need it didnt work out that way snd i expierenced 12 days of nothing but now that its back I want to give back we have a spare bedroom with just a single bed but its warm clean and has light I know how it must hurt to not be able to " come home" so I want to open our home to someone who needs some structure back in their life we do have 2 very large but sweet and protective dogs so must not be afraid we live close to Long Island train station so can get to penn station quickly we are located in huntington station Long Island it's myself my fiancé and 16 year old son and the dogs if we can help someone for nothing but making someone feel just a bit more hopeful and a bit more happy and comfortable please contact me my name is jessica look forward to helping give back structure and time to a good person
I am heartened to see the many people willing to help those in NY, NJ and CT in the wake of Sandy. However there are many other states which were affected and are being ignored - such as Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. These states have not yet been declared eligible to receive federal aid and are suffering, yet citizens are told to just "be patient". We are willing to have our business in Woodland Beach, Delaware, which was significantly damaged in the storm, act a focal point for people in Delaware who have been affected yet have no where to turn due to lack of assistance. Croaker's is located at 100 Beach Avenue, Smyrna (take route 6 east till you run out of road at the beach). I am sure that our many friends in fishing organizations throughout Delaware will help us in distributing aid where it is needed close to home.

The Far Rockaways are still extremely needy and not getting enough Federal or State aid. Two options for volunteers are EXTREMELY useful. If you can't volunteer, please donate: blankets, flashlights, batteries, soup and other non perishable foods (please limit cheap sugar products).

People in NY and NJ who are still at home with their pets or have emergency animal needs are urged to call 855-407-4787 for assistance. The hotline is for animal emergencies only. People seeking immediate assistance for people in need should dial 911. Operator said they will pick up pets and help find foster care, drop off pet food, etc. Someone answered the phone so that's encouraging.
Evacuees who left an animal behind can call the city’s hotline at 347-573-1561. Do not call this line to inquire about making a donation. The agency is asking to keep the line open for those in need.
The ASPCA mobile pet unit is stationed on Staten Island for pets of evacuees. It’s located at Susan E. Wagner High School, 1200 Manor Rd.
The ASPCA is also in the rockaways At Rockapup 145 Beach & 116th St.
In New Jersey, the ASPCA’s disaster response team is helping conduct water and land search-and-rescue for animals affected by the devastating storm in Ocean County, NJ. New Jersey residents in need of assistance can call 1-866-407-4787.

It's kind of ridiculous that NYC parks is asking for help at this time. They have employees with chainsaws who can remove the fallen trees it's really not that difficult. How about the people with wrecked homes, ruined clothes, no power, no water, etc? Shouldn't they be helped first? NYC parks should be ashamed of themselves.

As a native New Yorker I would like to know how the Red Cross whom at every disaster manages to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars for whatever the latest horrible disaster to findout these fund did not help those directly affected. I've learned from a friend that lives there that neighborhoods in brooklyn could use assistance. I have experienced incredible loss after Hurricane Katrina and have worked the emergency rooms caring for others. I feel this experience along with my clinical experience makes me and ideal volunteer. I would love the opportunity to serve those who are experiencing the fear of "What now?" The shock from the devastation is overwhelming. But I can share with them that there is hope.

A friend and I are experienced registered nurses ( ER/Trauma exp), and we are ready and willing to come in and help any way we can. Storm victims from other parts of the city are arriving in droves to a shelter in Washington Heights. They need volunteers and all manner of supplies.
Ahead of classes resuming on Monday the City is consolidating shelters, and George Washington High School will become one of the few remaining schools housing storm victims. I was at GW last night and learned that the current population of 160 adults and children will be swelling to 600-700 tonight.
The GW shelter is in need of volunteers at all hours, including overnight. They are also accepting donations of food and water, preferably in single-serve portions (easier to distribute).

They are a community organization that does great work in the neighborhood and is currently acting as a center for hurricane recovery efforts in Red Hook, especially coordinating volunteers and serving hot meals to residents. They are also accepting supplies and need more volunteers, too. Let them do it! Changing the marathon into the 2012 NCY Race to Help the People is a win-win-win-win proposition. The sponsors will stay in; the world’s popular opinion will pay off for all involved for all time.

Hello, My name is Victoria and I live in Pennsylvania. I am heartbroken over the events that are taking place in new jersey and new york. I am willing to open my home to victims with children that need a place to stay. I may not have much but I do have a couch, warmth, plenty of food, water, baby clothes and toys for infants. Meanwhile, it's distressing that, when trying to donate money at what begins at redhook.recovers.org (one of the recommended sites), you're kidnapped by an "occupy wall street" (OWS) page that tells you that "because there are different kinds of capital," your money WON'T help Red Hook. You're to understand, instead, that your donation--intended for the residents of Red Hook, will "go" to "long-term disaster relief." Where? When? For whom? By whom? Is OWS completely tone-deaf? >>I was trying to help some people in my own borough, in Red Hook, not to provide a platform for OWS rhetoric or monetary obfuscation. OWS just lost whatever respect I had for it. Maybe taking candy from babies, next?

Am I missing something, because the Jersey Cares website that Mayor Booker recommended is utterly useless. I am a trained clinical social worker looking for opportunities to help victims of Sandy, of all ages, who've experienced trauma. I would also volunteer for basic things like food preparation, building, anything where I can use the various skills I have. Thankyou for your radio service! It was extremely isolating to realise that when the power was out, the phone, the cell, TV etc is useless.It makes me seriously think about alternative power. I have a solar cell charger-it helped a LOT.
Even now, with power back, the info on the internet and TV re local transit is very poor or nil. Main info is about airports. The Path info has been zero.It is important to give people an idea how long it may take to get transit up, what options are available,so we can PLAN.
Going back to pre Sandy broadcasts:the practical info was NOT THERE re WHAT KIND OF FOOD to stash, how MUCH water,(always severely underestimated)
so that one does not have to gasp desperately for silly stuff like dry ice.

Sandy was still a surprise, no matter how much warning we were given. We don’t live in the Northeast, but would like to help. We found an online service that delivers free rental quotes for equipment and tools used in clean-up, called www.equiprent.com. They have rental companies in NY, NJ, PA, CT that carry portable generators, pumps, back hoes and tree clippers. Hope this helps.

We are a group of musicians interested in playing some acoustic music in the shelters in the evenings to help keep people entertained. Walking downtown today (around Madison Park) I saw a number of bakeries and restaurants that had no electricity, yet continued to receive large packages of bread - these packages were left outside their doors. Can there by a concerted effort to collect these packages and bring them to shelters??

I just checked at Park Slope Armory and as others have said they would LOVE to have people come volunteer starting around 6pm tonight (Halloween). they will take ANY TIME YOU HAVE TO GIVE no limits. City workers are going in as an alternative work site so they don't need community members during the day. ALSO they DO need medical personnel ANY time.

The Brooklyn Armory on 8th Ave and 14th St. seems to have enough volunteers for during the day, but is looking for volunteers for the evening and night shifts (after 7 pm). They seem to be willing to take volunteers on the off hours for shorter shifts than 8 hours. I asked about a 4 hr shift, but maybe even less at night.
Park Slope John Jay School has over 7 pages of excess interested listed volunteers as of yesterday, so the Red Cross list needs to be updated.

I just waited in line 30 minutes to buy a Box of Joe and a dozen donuts for a brigade of Public Service utility workers. I figured I had nothing but time, while they have too little time and maybe no idea what's open locally here in Essex County, NJ. They were appreciative. Now I'm in search of sandwiches.

I've registered to volunteer with Astoria Recovers, and although the pledge drive is over I'll be contributing to help keep WNYC up and running. This station goes well beyond expectations as a mere news outlet and is showing us in these crazy times what broadcasting is all about. Thank you again, and please keep up the good work.
Having worked in a Brooklyn shelter this week, I'd like to shine a bit more light on what the needs are, at least at my particular shelter.
Registered Nurses: Yes! Shelters are supposed to have at least one nurse on site. We particularly need nurses on the night shift (think after midnight). I'm sure the Armory could use medical volunteers as well.
Translation: Do you speak fluent Spanish, Russian, Urdu or Chinese? Your skills are, again, particularly needed at night when many volunteers go home. We have access to the Language Line, but it's so much easier to have a fluent speaker next to you when you're asking someone to observe quiet hours.
Toys: Non-fabric kids toys, books and DVDs would be SUPER! Shelters have a ton of kids. Crayons, markers, coloring paper and construction paper are particularly helpful. We don't want to stress the school's resources.
Mental Health: a counselor trained in crisis management would be helpful on the day shift to speak to shelterees.
Chaplains: I'm sure some shelterees would appreciate speaking to a chaplain.
Kosher/Halal meals: Check with your local shelter, but many shelters have residents with food restrictions that aren't being served by the cafeteria staff.
Clothes: Clothes must be in plastic bags form a laundromat to ensure they don't have bed bugs. If you want to help, spend an extra $10 by taking your clothes to a professional laundry.
Adult stuff: books and dvds, particularly ones in other languages, would be helpful for adults.
Support the volunteers: I would love it if someone brought us volunteers coffee and donuts when we are fading at 2am. Same goes for any hour. We have plenty of wholesome food from the cafeterias, but goodies really keep you motivated late at night.

First off, I would like to send my condolences to your community after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. My name is Rick Malo I am an experienced volunteer regarding disaster recovery. I've helped with earthquake relief in Pisco Peru in 2008; Katrina relief over the past few years; and the recent Catskills flood relief in addition to many other Habitat For Humanity builds. Also, I am currently an emergency room nurse working in a level 1 trauma ER in Bethlehem Pa; my background further includes being an EMT for the past 5 years.
Please let me know what I (and a few other friends with similar background) could do to seriously help your community--and surrounding communities such as Breezy Point---in this time of need. Thank you and I look forward to your response. Please email and/or call. Our area is experiencing power outages along with cell phone issues, but I'm sure I could receive one of the two if both are sent.
