The Republican candidate facing embattled Democratic Assemblyman Vito Lopez in the November election told WNYC on Wednesday that he was no longer interested in continuing his campaign for the 53rd Assembly District in Brooklyn.
Richy Garcia spoke with WNYC from the Board of Elections warehouse in Brooklyn where he works part-time.
Garcia, who is in his 20s, said the decision was entirely his own, and that he wanted to focus on other parts of his life.
Lopez lost his leadership positions in Albany, as well as his spot as head of the Brooklyn Democratic Party, following accusations of sexual harassment surfaced in August.
Garcia and Lopez will be the only candidates for the 53rd Assembly district on the ballot in next month's election.
The chair of the Brooklyn Republican Party, Craig Eaton, said in a phone call he was trying to reach Garcia.
