Ex-NY Senator Hiram Monserrate Gets 2 Years in Prison
Tuesday, December 11, 2012
Former state Senator Hiram Monserrate was sentenced to two years in prison for fraud on Tuesday.
The Queens Democrat pleaded guilty in May to using taxpayer money to fund his failed 2006 for state Senate. He lost the race but was later elected to the post two years later.
In 2010, he was expelled after being convicted of assaulting his girlfriend.
Prosecutors said Monserrate secretly funneled about $100,000 in funds meant for community programs while he was on the City Council.
