OSHA Head on Hazardous Conditions Created by Sandy

The head of New York's agency in charge of workplace safety said he's concerned about the potential dangers lurking in the post-Sandy cleanup efforts.
Richard Mendelson, head of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration in New York, told WNYC that mold is a big concern.
"What we have done in the wake of Sandy is issue specific guidance on mold clean up related to the Sandy cleanup as well as personal protective equipment and other necessary items that workers have to avail themselves of," he said.
Paper and surgical masks aren't suitable for mold removal, he said. Respirators are necessary.
Mendelson said the 5,000 new hires on the way as part of a federally funded cleanup project will be given safety training.
