Wal-Mart to Shutter City's Apparel Office

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Retail giant Wal-Mart announced plans to move its New York City apparel office to Bentonville, Arkansas, where the company's headquarters is located.

In a letter to employees on Wednesday, the company said it plans to complete the relocation to Bentonville by February 1, saying the move is in-line with its renewed focus on fashion basics.

Some of the 275 employees are expected to be relocated.

Wal-Mart opened its Broadway office between 37th and 38th streets in 2009. Plans to shutter the office come as the retailer seeks to open new stores in the city.

Steve Restivo, the company's senior director of community affairs, said in a statement that the decision to relocate the apparel office "has no bearing" on those plans.
