Universities Court City With Science Campus Proposals

Thursday, March 17, 2011

More than two dozen academic institutions from around the world have said they'd be willing to put in money and manpower to develop a new scientific research campus in New York City.

The proposals came in response to a call by city officials seeking a partner to develop an applied sciences research campus.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said such a campus could bolster the city's tech industry and lead to the creation of well-paid jobs for years to come.

The Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Israel's Technion Institute are among the international universities that submitted plans.

Closer to home, Stanford, Cornell, Columbia and NYU also offered ideas for a research facility in the five boroughs.

Governors Island, the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Farm Colony on Staten Island are among the sites the city has offered as possible locations for the new research campus.

Officials expect to pick a plan by the end of this year.
