Schools Deputy Chancellor Nadelstern Announces Retirement

Friday, January 21, 2011

Schools Deputy Chancellor Eric Nadelstern announced his retirement Friday.

Nadelstern, who has served in the school system for 39 years, said he's leaving for personal reasons now that he's just turned 60, and that his decision has nothing to do with the change in leadership at the Department of Education.

He tells WNYC that he is confident in the new chancellor, Cathie Black, and that he's pursuing opportunities in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

Nadelstern began his tenure in the school system as an English and a Second Language teacher. He founded the first International High School and was the point-person for small new schools.

Bloomberg attacked the pension system and is leading the chorus of nationwide voices that are calling for the end of the municipal pensions, as if those of us who work in fields to further the public good don't deserve to retire with pensions. But Klein and Nadelstern are both dipping their well-manicured paws into the same pension fund that is supposedly too broke to sustain the rest of us peons. Hypocrites!
