MoMA Acquires Controversial Video

Thursday, January 13, 2011

The Museum of Modern Art has acquired a controversial film by artist David Wojnarowicz that was removed from the Smithsonian in November after a religious group objected to the segment in which ants crawl over a crucifix.

The 13-minute video, "A Fire in My Belly," has appeared in a number of galleries -- including the lobby of the New Museum -- but this is the first time the piece has been acquired. Both Wojnarowicz, the artist, and his partner died of AIDS-related complications and he made the video about the AIDS epidemic.

President of the Catholic League, Bill Donohue, and several Republican congressmen criticized the segment and said it was offensive to Christians.

"A Fire in My Belly" is now on display at MoMA as part of the "Contemporary Art from the Collection" exhibition.
