The volunteer group New York Cares has decided to extend its annual winter coat drive for another week, due to last month's blizzard. Executive Director Gary Bagley said the blizzard presented a challenge for the group, which is trying to collect at least 70,000 coats for those in need.
"New Yorkers, during the month of December, can donate in many locations, many of which were not as accessible because of the blizzard, or folks who would have come to New York City during that time did not come because of the weather," Bagley said.
The winter coat drive, usually held during the entire month of December, is now in its 22nd year. Bagley said collection sites will be stay open through Friday, January 14.
Donations can be dropped off during the morning rush hours, between 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at Penn Station, near the Long Island Rail Road and Amtrak. Badgley said they can also be dropped off at Port Authority Bus Terminal during the same hours.
He also noted that several Manhattan Mini Storage sites, and the group's warehouse at 250 Hudson Street, where the coats are sorted, will be accepting donations from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. He said people can also contact the group directly if they'd like to donate.
