City Officials Urge 9/11 First Responders to Accept Settlement
Tuesday, October 05, 2010
City officials say there are still thousands of 9/11 first responders who haven't accepted their share of a $712 million settlement.
For the settlement to be paid out, 95 percent of plaintiffs need to sign up for the victims compensation fund. According Worby Groner Napoli & Bern, the main law firm handing the settlement, over 75 percent have done so. Kenneth Feinberg who is overseeing the fund's appeals process, is urging the remaining plaintiffs to meet the November 8 deadline.
"The alternatives are unacceptable... protracted litigation for years," Feinberg said. "How much longer are you going to wait to get some compensation?"
Feinberg spoke with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and several first responders at his side. According to the mayor, accepting the settlement would not prevent plaintiffs from accepting any additional payout, if Congress passes a bill now under consideration. It's already passed the House, and is awaiting a vote in the Senate.
