Additional Job Cuts at Brookdale Hospital

Wednesday, November 03, 2010

Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn says it's had to make additional job cuts and consolidate services. It's the second round of cuts for Brookdale in less than two years.

The hospital, which has one of the busiest emergency rooms in the borough, terminated 114 employees this fall, including physicians and management staff.

1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers, the union representing some 3,000 employees at the hospital, confirmed that 40 of its members were included in the latest cuts. They follow 200 worker layoffs last March.

The hospital blames several rounds of state and federal funding cuts, totaling more than $50 million.

Brookdale is one of many New York-area hospitals struggling with budget shortfalls. St. Vincent's Hospital, in Greenwich Village, closed in April.  Two months later, Harlem's North General Hospital was forced to close its doors.
