Mosque at Ground Zero Would Need Landmarks Approval
Monday, May 24, 2010
City officials say a plan for a mosque just blocks from ground zero will need the approval of the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission. They say 45 Park Place was built in the 1850's and is both historically and architecturally significant. The building used to house the Burlington Coat Factory. The Cordoba Institute wants to tear it down to build a mosque and community center. But some 9/11 families are opposed to a mosque so close to the site where radical Muslims took down the World Trade Center. Tomorrow, a community board holds a public hearing, and votes on whether to support the project.
