No Plans Yet to Reopen State Parks

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

With the budget in Albany nearly seven weeks late, state parks will remain closed. Governor Paterson has told legislative leaders that he has no plans to put extra funds in future emergency spending measures to reopen the 55 parks and historic sites closed this week.

Governor Paterson in a leaders meeting was asked by legislative leaders weather he would put funding for parks in the next emergency spending measure. He said no.

"It's irresponsible of me even if I'm the most unpopular person in this state. To start putting ad backs", Paterson said.

Paterson says he fears it would open a flood gate of requests to restore other items like construction projects and summer youth programs and he says without a new budget the state doesn't have the money. The budget is now over six-weeks late.
