Paid Sick Leave Has Ample Support in City Council

Should New York go the way of San Francisco and Washington DC: cities that require employers to provide paid sick leave? A City Council committee is weighing that question. WNYC's Ilya Marritz has more.
REPORTER: In hearings Tuesday, most council members sounded sympathetic to the labor groups advocating for paid sick leave. But not Daniel Halloran, a freshman member from Flushing, who said most small businesses operate on a five percent margin, and can't afford any added costs.
HALLORAN: I'd just like to know if any of you studied that before you made your tremendous pronouncements here about how this is not gonna have an effect on small businesses.
REPORTER: Sherry Leiwant from the group "A Better Balance" took that one. She estimates paid sick leave would cost many businesses as little as eight cents an hour extra.
LEIWANT: I understand that's not nothing but on the other hand, it's not a lot.
REPORTER: The bill already has enough support to pass the council, and override a veto. The Mayor hasn't yet taken a position. For WNYC, I'm Ilya Marritz.
