Fifth Member of Paterson’s Administration Resigns
Wednesday, March 17, 2010
New York, NY –
Gov. David Paterson's press secretary Marissa Shorenstein is resigning, making her the fifth top staffer to resign amid ethical controversies that threaten the administration.
In a statement, Shorenstein says she is resigning because she can no longer do her job effectively. She says that's because of "circumstances" that have led to what she calls her "unwitting involvement in recent news stories."
The New York Times has reported Shorenstein--at Paterson's direction--contacted a woman who had accused a top Paterson aide of domestic violence. The woman later dropped her pursuit of a restraining order. Shorenstein says she's always performed her duties with "professionalism and integrity," basing her actions on what she "believed to be true at the time."
Paterson's communications director, deputy secretary for public safety and state police superintendent have also resigned.
