NYC High-School Graduation Rates Climb

Tuesday, March 09, 2010

New York City's four-year high school graduation rate has risen to 59 percent, an increase of almost three percentage points since the last academic year. The state's graduation rate of 72 percent barely budged in that same period. Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that contrast proves his education reforms are paying off.

"The relative performance of New York City students compared to those in the rest of the state is something that nobody can disagree with," he says.

The city's graduation rate was under 50 percent when Bloomberg took office.

The rates for black and Hispanic pupils are still between 20 and 25 points behind those of white and Asian students. But Chancellor Joel Klein says this gap has closed by more than 10 points in the last four years.
