Bloomberg Kicks off Arts Week
Tuesday, March 02, 2010
New York, NY –
Mayor Michael Bloomberg launched a week of cultural activities today, including the 22nd annual Art Dealer's Association of America Art Show. Despite last year's economic recession, Bloomberg says a study performed by NYC Arts showed a surprising finding:
"People would rather scale back their spending on other things before scaling back their spending on cultural activities," the mayor says. "And attendance at our cultural institutions actually rose five to eight percent last year."
Some 60,000 visitors are expected to generate $44 million in revenue. Events includes tours, performances, parties, museum discounts, and open studios -- including rare access to the studio of artist Christo and the Alexander Calder Foundation.
The Armory Art Show is the week's main event with contemporary art from more than 30 countries exhibited along piers on the Hudson River. The Armory Show opens to the general public on Thursday. Arts week runs until Sunday.
