Many Caregivers Unaware of Available Resources

In New York, social service providers say grandparents and other relatives who care for children are not taking advantage of the resources available to them. At a town hall meeting in Flatbush, Brooklyn this week, they urged more than a hundred non-parent caregivers in attendance to apply for a state grant and enroll in programs that can help them.
WALLACE: You'd be surprised, we know that most people come to us completely unaware that these services are out there.
REPORTER: Gerard Wallace is director of the New York State Kinship Navigator, which administers the Caregiver grant. The AARP says more than 400,000 New Yorkers qualify for it, but only 10 percent actually apply.
