A $4 million federal stimulus grant will be flowing into the Bronx as part of an effort to fight the borough's almost 14 percent unemployment rate. The grant is designated to provide training for green jobs.

Rebecca Lurie, director of development for the Consortium for Worker Education, runs the program and says applicants can get training through a variety of non-profits, including Sustainable South Bronx and the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation. "Some may take individual classes at SoBRO or Association for Energy Affordability and get ramped up to be credentialed and employable with the industries that are growing," Lurie says.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. says the money will go a long way. "We're going to be able to train Bronxites, people who actually live in the borough, so they can have jobs in the green economy," Diaz says.

The program has room for 425 people and will begin operating in the next six weeks. The job training program is open to residents of certain South Bronx districts.

The Bronx has the city's highest unemployment rate, at 13.9 percent.

The grant is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
