MTA officials have come up with a revised list of service cuts to balance the authority's budget. The changes will have different winners and losers than the first round of proposed cuts, but officials say overall, they've minimized the impact. WNYC's Matthew Schuerman has more.
REPORTER: Since the original list came out last month, MTA planners have been scrutinizing bus maps and ridership figures. They say they've come up with a better way to save the same amount of money, about $77 million a year. Express bus lines lose out -- eight weekday routes would be cut instead of just two. But late night subway trains would continue to run every 20 minutes, instead of every 30. Also, the Z train would be saved. The M train will be eliminated entirely, although its northern branch will be repalced by an extension of the V line.. Public hearings on the changes will take place in March, with the MTA board voting on them shortly afterwards. Changes go into effect this summer.
