The city's unemployment rate jumped from 10 percent to 10.6 percent last month, the highest in 16 years. WNYC's Lisa Chow explains why.
REPORTER: It's kind of almost an accounting problem. There was actually a net gain in jobs last month for NYC - 5,400 jobs - but the problem is even more people jumped back into the workforce to look for jobs, which affects this number. Now we do know that there are 400,000 New Yorkers in the city who are out of work. That's up 50 percent from a year ago. And the sectors that are struggling: construction, manufacturing, museums and even the U.S. Postal Service.
