We are smaller not for profit that is making things happen.
Anyone that wants to come aboard our next trip leaving on Friday is welcome.
We are taking some needed supplies in through DR. We have transportation, communication with volunteers in Haiti ;we are an energetic cautious group to work with.

P.S. Still pissed off that ARC went around Ground Zero area, knocking on doors, offering money to whomever because they didn't know what to do with all their donations. Fact: A friend's friend got a new bike this way. He was handed a check. Fact: ARC threw out donated blood because they didn't need it. Was there something else they could have done with it, I don't know.

Two organizations rate charities according to what percentage they actually spend on aid and what kicks back to their functionaries. I would check ratings before donating to any organization. They are American Institute of Philanthropy and Charity Navigator. Btw, the American Red Cross only earned three out of four stars. Many others consistently rate four of four.

Is is possible that WNYC could have a listner fund raising day with matching grants in the style done to support the station.

Concern has been working in Haiti since 1994 and currently has programs in health, water/sanitation, education, livelihoods, and HIV and AIDS. The Concern team has already conducted rapid needs assessments of the worst-affected areas, including 10 health centers where we already had heaoth programs before the quake. We have carried out distributions of critical medical supplies, emergency therapeutic food for children, and water to the State University Hospital. We have also distributed pick axes (to clear rubble), surgical gloves, disinfectant, water purification tablets, water, and first aid supplies to community leaders in the poorest slum communities in Port-au-Prince. Concern has also dispatched two charter planes to Haiti loaded with critically needed supplies, including tents, jerry cans, plastic sheeting, water pumps, water containers, and plumpy' nut). Over the coming days and weeks, Concern will work to deliver vital humanitarian aid to the people of Haiti . Our Emergency Engineering Manager and our water and sanitation experts are preparing a 10,000 liter "bladder" tank for emergency water distrubutions.

Haiti had 370K orphans before the earthquake.We need to get the Haitians on a permanent road to a better life. I believe in helping for permanent relief. Why not let governments do the initial aid THEN let regular people, DONATE 4 CHANGE. Move the children and willing mothers to Guantanamo. If the USA can make prisons we can make GOOD camps for catastrophe sufferers

Another excellent organization is Direct Relief International (directrelief.org) which gets medical supplies to local partners. On Friday, they are sending $2 million in medicines and medical supplies to Partners in Health in Haiti on Friday, with cargo transportation provided at no cost by FedEx.

The Haitian Red Cross has been serving Haiti since 1932. They and the American Red Cross are working hand in hand on the ground. Checks for the earthquake relief should be made out to American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington D.C. 20013 or to your local Red Cross chapter. Designate "Haiti" in the memo portion of the check and it will be earmarked ONLY for Haiti. (I volunteer at the Red Cross and have been answering phones in Ridgewood for two days).
