Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Smarter Toddler Nursery and Preschool held an amazing Fundraiser to support the organization Doctors Without Borders in Haiti. So I would also encourage anyone to donate to Doctors without Borders: www.doctorswithoutborders.org
We are smaller not for profit that is making things happen.
Anyone that wants to come aboard our next trip leaving on Friday is welcome.
We are taking some needed supplies in through DR. We have transportation, communication with volunteers in Haiti ;we are an energetic cautious group to work with.
We just want to see what we bought go directly to the people of Haiti.
Thats a question we all have?
Catholic Relief Services is another organization with a long history of relief work in Haiti. www.crs.org
P.S. Still pissed off that ARC went around Ground Zero area, knocking on doors, offering money to whomever because they didn't know what to do with all their donations. Fact: A friend's friend got a new bike this way. He was handed a check. Fact: ARC threw out donated blood because they didn't need it. Was there something else they could have done with it, I don't know.
Two organizations rate charities according to what percentage they actually spend on aid and what kicks back to their functionaries. I would check ratings before donating to any organization. They are American Institute of Philanthropy and Charity Navigator. Btw, the American Red Cross only earned three out of four stars. Many others consistently rate four of four.
Is is possible that WNYC could have a listner fund raising day with matching grants in the style done to support the station.
Are there any charities I can directly donate to in Haiti? I'm not interested in providing any money to American or Internationally based organizaions.
There are two more organizations that are reliable and whose workers have been in country for some time, through which people can donate to help recovery:
ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America)Disaster Response
39330 Treasury Centre
Chicago, IL 60694-9300
(write "Haiti Earthquake Relief" in memo section of your check - 100% of gifts designated to Haiti will be used in Haiti.
Can also donate by credit card by calling 800-638-3522 or going to the web site: www.elca.org and click on "Donate" text on picture about assisstance to Haiti.
************************************
Also, Lutheran World Relief (helping people facing disaster for 60 yrs.) has been assisting in Haiti since 2008 after hurricane damage.
Send donations to:
LWR
70 Light St.
Baltimore, MD 21230-3850
or on line: http://www.lwr.org.
Contributions to Haiti relief through both of these organizations will be matched $1 for $2 of individual's gift by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, for Thrivent members. Go to www.thrivent.com/helpinghaiti/index.html.
are you kidding me? i just heard a report on NPR that a woman has no money for a bus ride for her and her niece to get out! what about all the "money" that everyone is donating? organizations don't need money, they need a clue on how to organize and distribute. This is ridiculous. and don't get me started on the media...
[...] If you’d rather give a direct cash donation, WNYC has a list of organizations here. [...]
Concern has been working in Haiti since 1994 and currently has programs in health, water/sanitation, education, livelihoods, and HIV and AIDS. The Concern team has already conducted rapid needs assessments of the worst-affected areas, including 10 health centers where we already had heaoth programs before the quake. We have carried out distributions of critical medical supplies, emergency therapeutic food for children, and water to the State University Hospital. We have also distributed pick axes (to clear rubble), surgical gloves, disinfectant, water purification tablets, water, and first aid supplies to community leaders in the poorest slum communities in Port-au-Prince. Concern has also dispatched two charter planes to Haiti loaded with critically needed supplies, including tents, jerry cans, plastic sheeting, water pumps, water containers, and plumpy' nut). Over the coming days and weeks, Concern will work to deliver vital humanitarian aid to the people of Haiti . Our Emergency Engineering Manager and our water and sanitation experts are preparing a 10,000 liter "bladder" tank for emergency water distrubutions.
The American Friends Service Committee's history in Haiti began in the late 1920s. We are accepting donations now for immediate needs, but we also will be there working with our partners - as we did after the 2004 Asian tsunami. Donate at www.afsc.org or 1-888-588-2372.
More locations in Brooklyn accepting donations of clothing etc. to Haiti: State Senator Eric Adams' office @ 572 Flatbush btw Beekman + Midwood, 10-6 every day, special open house for donations saturday 4-9.
Also can donate @ Vox Pop, 1022 Cortelyou Rd
Donate clothing/toys/medical supplies in Brooklyn: @ Brooklyn College by 5pm Friday, 2147 Boylan Hall.
Also @ Haitian Literacy Project, M-F 11-4, 208 Parkside 2nd Floor. Also @ Haitain Women Refugees, M+W 6:30-8:30pm, 335 Maple St. 2nd fl.
Haiti had 370K orphans before the earthquake. We need to get the Haitians on a permanent road to a better life. I believe in helping for permanent relief. Why not let governments do the initial aid THEN let regular people, DONATE 4 CHANGE. Move the children and willing mothers to Guantanamo. If the USA can make prisons we can make GOOD camps for catastrophe sufferers
Another excellent organization is Direct Relief International (directrelief.org) which gets medical supplies to local partners. On Friday, they are sending $2 million in medicines and medical supplies to Partners in Health in Haiti on Friday, with cargo transportation provided at no cost by FedEx.
[I'm not associated with the org.]
I think at this point you should donate money.
The Haitian Red Cross has been serving Haiti since 1932. They and the American Red Cross are working hand in hand on the ground. Checks for the earthquake relief should be made out to American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington D.C. 20013 or to your local Red Cross chapter. Designate "Haiti" in the memo portion of the check and it will be earmarked ONLY for Haiti. (I volunteer at the Red Cross and have been answering phones in Ridgewood for two days).
[...] List compiled by WNYC [...]
I have a great deal of clothing (for women & girl's) and house goods I would like to donate. Is there a location in Staten Island that will take all of these items? I would love to help!
Where in Brooklyn can people donate clothing, toys, etc.? I am moving soon and would like to do so.
