The economy is stalling a lot of development projects around the city, but the developer of the Domino Sugar plant in Williamsburg Brooklyn is moving forward with its plans. The proposal officially began its months long land-use review process yesterday. WNYC's Matthew Schuerman has more.
REPORTER: A private developer, CPC Resources, wants to build five towers on the site, ranging up to 40 stories high. While their size could draw community opposition, the developer says the towers will be no higher than others going up nearby, along the Williamsburg waterfront. The developer's also counting on churches and affordable housing groups to support the project because 30 percent of the 2,200 apartments will be priced for low- and moderate-income families. The century-old refinery will be incorporated into the complex, and the yellow Domino Sugar sign will be also preserved. Over the next seven months, the local community board, city council and other government entities will be holding public hearings on the proposal. For WNYC, I'm Matthew Schuerman.
