Paterson Responds to Rumors, Decries 'Frenzy'

Tuesday, February 09, 2010

Gov. David Paterson says that a forthcoming story by The New York Times that's been the subject of widespread speculation will not lead to his resignation.

In his first news conference on the subject, Paterson attempted to quell rumors that have been swirling for weeks, including allegations about extra-marital affairs and illegal drug use.

Paterson characterized the rumors as "false allegations, unsubstantiated rumors, and, in some cases, straight-out lies."

Paterson says he was interviewed today by New York Times reporters. He says they did not ask him to address any incendiary charges about his personal life.

The governor says there is no reason for him to resign -- and he still plans to seek re-election.

"I haven't had discussions with anyone about not running for re-election because I've said I'm running, and I have not had any conversations with anyone about resigning, because I don't know why I'd be resigning," Paterson says, adding, "The only way I'm not going to be governor next year is at the ballot box, and the only way that I'll be leaving office before is in a box."

Paterson says the rumor-mongering seems orchestrated, but he does not have any idea who may be behind it, or why.
