City May Cut Thousands of Section 8 Housing Vouchers

The New York City Housing Authority is running out of money to fund more than 10,000 housing vouchers for low-income families.
The housing authority revoked close to 2,600 Section Eight vouchers last December, but those vouchers weren't actually in use yet. Instead, most families slated to get them were still in the process of finding apartments and filling out paperwork.
This time, the vouchers in jeopardy are going to families who use them to pay rent in private apartments.
The New York City Housing Authority blames the problem on a $45 million deficit due to a shortage of federal funding. But the Department of Housing and Urban Development says the housing authority over-extended itself.
NYCHA is looking to all levels of government for help. If it can't close its budget gap a spokeswoman says it'll either completely revoke vouchers, pay less rent to landlords, or a combination of the two.
