Energy-Efficient Lampposts Unveiled in Central Park

Thursday, September 17, 2009

New lampposts were unveiled today in Central Park, equipped with energy-efficient bulbs.

The 13 lights between East 67th and 72nd streets are the first installation in an initiative to test LED-bulb technology in real-world settings to see if the greenhouse-gas-reducing bulbs can provide enough light for urban areas.

The initiative also includes 24 such lamps along the FDR drive between 18th and 24th streets.

New York is the first city to launch a pilot project under the LightSavers program - a venture of The Climate Group, which partners with governments and businesses worldwide to fight climate change.
