Whirls and Twirls on 59th Street

Commuters passing through the 59th Street – Columbus Circle subway station can now see one of the last commissioned works by the late conceptual artist Sol Lewitt. The piece is called “Whirls and Twirls (MTA),” and its brightly colored tile design is 11 feet high, and stretches 55 feet along one wall. Sandra Bloodworth is the director of MTA Arts for Transit.
BLOODWORTH: Just the energy of it, the color, the movement that evokes transportation and people moving through a station. You must see it in person. You feel that the artist is present.
Lewitt died two years ago. Two more of his tile pieces are coming to the Columbus Circle station, later this fall.
