Ex-Police Official Declins Request to Quit MTA

Thursday, September 10, 2009

The fallout continues from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's report on improper political influence in the state police. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more.

REPORTER: Governor Paterson has asked for the resignation of David S. Mack from his position as deputy chairman of the MTA and from his seat on the Port Authority. Mack invoked The Fifth Amendment when Cuomo's investigators were looking into his tenure as a deputy superintendent of the state police during the Pataki administration. Mack has rejected Paterson's call to step down, saying through a spokesman that he fully cooperated with the investigation, and merely invoked his constitutional rights.

A spokesperson for the governor says Paterson is seeking legal advice on whether he can remove Mack without a resignation. And at the same time, the governor's looking for replacements for both the MTA and Port Authority boards. For WNYC I am Bob Hennelly.
