New York, NY –
New York City has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, but Mayor Bloomberg says some surprising loop-holes still need to be closed. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more.
REPORTER: Currently a gun owner with a permit to carry a firearm could be too drunk to drive, yet legally carry their gun while intoxicated. In Mayor Bloomberg's latest campaign proposal, that would be a crime, carrying a year of jail time.
BLOOMBERG: If you are in a bar and you see somebody intoxicated and think they might have a gun I know what I would do, I'd either leave that bar or call the cops. I don't want to get shot.
REPORTER: Individuals who are carrying a gun illegally would also be subject to the proposed law. Nineteen states already have laws on the books that limit gun possession by intoxicated individuals - and those with documented drinking problems.
Since 2007 the NYPD requires all officers on or off duty who fire their weapons and wound someone - to submit to a breathalyzer test. For WNYC I'm Bob Hennelly.
