Council Approves MoMA Expansion

Thursday, October 29, 2009

The City Council has approved the Museum of Modern Art's expansion plans in midtown. The proposal includes a 1,000 foot tall building that will contain museum space, private residences and a hotel. Council Speaker Christine Quinn says she supports the plan, even though her local community board opposes it.

QUINN: It is, will be, a tall and large building. There's no two ways around that, and in a lot of places in the city of New York, this would be an inappropriate building. But I don't believe this block in the mid-50s, between 5th and 6th, is an inappropriate place for an addition of one iconic building of this sort.

REPORTER: The skyscraper will be built on West 53rd Street, next to MoMA's current location.
