The domestic violence trial for State Senator Hiram Monserrate continues in state supreme court in Queens. Monserrate declined a jury trial, so Justice William Erlbaum has been hearing the case and will decide the verdict alone.
Monserrate's lawyer says he expects to start presenting the defense's case this week, possibly as early as today.
Political observers are watching the trial because its outcome could affect the fragile power balance in Albany.
If Monserrate is convicted, the Senate will once again be deadlocked, with an even number of Democrats and Republicans. Monserrate was one of a few Democrats who jumped ship this summer and tried to form a new coalition with the deposed Republican leaders.
Last Wednesday, the most anticipated witness took the stand - former girlfriend Karla Giraldo. She firmly defended Monserrate, testifying her face was slashed by glass accidentally which contradicted earlier testimony by the ER doctor who treated her cuts.
