Advocates Push for Mandatory Paid Sick Days
Friday, October 02, 2009
New York, NY –
With Fall here, and many concerned over swine flu, worker advocates are putting the pressure on City Hall to require businesses to provide paid sick days.
Business groups say that would put an unfair burden on employers. But Nancy Rankin, a member of the New York State Paid Leave Coalition, says businesses made the same argument during efforts to raise the minimum wage, only to be proven wrong.
RANKIN: The truth is if people come to work sick, they get everybody else sick and then you're in worse shape and you lose more productivity.
REPORTER: Rankin was part of a rally in Lower Manhattan yesterday.
A bill that's before the City Council would require employers to give five days to workers at small businesses, and nine for employees at medium and large firms. The council is expected to vote on the legislation sometime this fall.
