New Law Protects Workers Who Report Labor Violations

Thursday, November 26, 2009

A new law aimed at protecting workers who report labor violations went into effect this week. The law raises fines for employers who retaliate against workers by firing them, demoting them, or giving them less favorable shifts.

GERSTEIN: You can bet we are going to use this new law extremely aggressively because we feel it is critical for workers to be able to talk to the government to be able to report violations without being afraid that they are going to suffer some kind of retaliation.

REPORTER: That's Terri Gersteen, deputy commissioner at the New York State Department of Labor.

Fines for retaliation, used to be between $200 and $2,000, Now they are between $1,000 and $10,000.
