New York, NY –
100 turkeys prepared by Rikers Island inmates will be served at a Thanksgiving dinner for needy New Yorkers today. The Church of the Heavenly Rest on Manhattan's East Side sponsors the dinner, and says typically more than 400 people show up to eat.
Inmate Gabriel Ceasar says the turkeys were seasoned with oregano, minced garlic, lemon-pepper, parsley and thyme:
CEASAR: We had a chef working with us so we used his recipe. We all took culinary arts classes so we pretty much had an idea. He just coached us and we all did it together.
REPORTER: Ceasar is part of a program that trains about 66 inmates for jobs in food service each year. The Osborne Association runs it, and says the program also helps the men find housing, and teaches them parenting skills since many of them are fathers.
