Bloomberg Keeps Spotlight on Illegal Gun Control
Tuesday, November 24, 2009
New York, NY –
As he pushes for Congress to tighten gun laws, Mayor Bloomberg has announced charges against two men who bought illegal guns in Florida and sold them in Brooklyn. WNYC's Arun Venugopal has more.
REPORTER: The mayor said such trafficking thrives because of what's known as the gun show loophole, and that it's directly connected to recent shooting deaths in the city.
BLOOMBERG: And until Congress closes the loophole, more innocent children, like Vada Vasquez will be shot with illegal guns.
REPORTER: There was a time when shooting crimes, the kind of events usually confined to the crime blotter, were handled by the police commissioner, or a DA.
These days, however, the mayor is taking the lead, merging a local issue with his national objectives. The mayor's coalition - Mayors Against Illegal Guns - has lobbied to tighten the rules at gun shows.
The group also published a full-page ad in the Washington Post yesterday, calling for the federal government to prevent those on the terror watch list from buying guns. For WNYC, I'm Arun Venugopal.
