Police Shoot Queens Teen 11 Times

Monday, November 23, 2009

A teenager in Queens killed in a confrontation with New York City police was shot 11 times. The city medical examiner's office says Dashawn Vasconcellos had three gunshot wounds in his back, five in his right side, and three on his left side. The NYPD says three officers fired a total of 14 times at the 18-year-old as he ran from them with a drawn gun. Police commissioner Ray Kelly says he can't say at this time that it was excessive force. "The investigation is going forward and there's a lot more work to be done. We do a very in-depth investigation with every instance of a police-involved shooting," Kelly says.

According to police, Vasconcellos and two others were stopped by plainclothes officers after they were spotted leaving a city park in Far Rockaway late Saturday night. Police say Vasconcellos started to run, pointing a semiautomatic pistol at police, but did not fire the gun at police.
