New York, NY –
The New Jersey Legislature starts deliberating on bills in Trenton today. Democrats are in the majority, and they hope to make laws before the Governorship shifts into Republican hands. WNYC's Bob Hennelly reports.
REPORTER: Both gay marriage proponents and opponents will be busy working the corridors in the state Capitol today, hoping to press their point of view with legislators.
Time is short for marriage equality backers. They have less than two months to go before Governor Corzine, who supports the gay marriage bill, is replaced by Republican Chris Christie who's vowed to veto it.
The agenda also could include a bill to support the medical use of marijuana, and rolling back mandatory minimum jail terms for non-violent drug offenses.
But it won't just be policy debated today. Senate Democrats will caucus are are expected to pick southern Jersey senator Steve Sweeney to succeed senate president Richard Codey in January when the new legislative session begins. For WNYC in New Jersey, I'm Bob Hennelly.
