NY Court: Married Gay Couples Entitled to Benefits

Friday, November 20, 2009

New York's top court has okayed the state's recognition of out-of-state same-sex marriages.

The Court of Appeals ruled public officials have the authority to extend health insurance and other benefits to gay and lesbian couples legally married in other states or countries. In their narrow decision the judges did not take up the broader issue of marriage equality. They said they hoped the legislature would address the issue.

The state Assembly has passed a bill legalizing gay marriage, but the State Senate has not brought it to the floor for a vote.
