CUNY Faces Big Cuts From City

The Bloomberg Administration's latest cost-cutting plan limits the impact on public schools, but not on the city's university system. WNYC's Bob Hennelly reports.
REPORTER: The City University system is in the class of agencies being hit the hardest, a four-percent cut in the current year and an eight-percent roll back for the next.
The news comes as CUNY's enrollment has jumped by 10 percent in just the last year. Spokesman Mike Arena, says the University's gearing up to make their case that in a time of double-digit unemployment, they should be spared.
ARENA: The first place that many new Yorkers are going to are our community colleges. They provide the kind of training and retraining people need and they are affordable.
REPORTER: Last year, the City Council bought that argument and restored close to $28 million in cuts to CUNY. The system has more than a quarter million students, including an increasing number of U.S. veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. For WNYC I am Bob Hennelly.
