NYPD: Sexual Harassment Is ‘No. 1 Quality of Life Offense’ on Subways

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Four hundred and twelve people have been arrested so far this year for acts of sexual abuse or lewdness on city subways. That's what the police told the City Council today in a hearing on what the NYPD and Metropolitan Transit Authority are doing about sexual harassment on the subways.

Chief James Hall heads the NYPD's Transit bureau. He says there's been a slight uptick in complaints this year. "I think, by and large, we really go hard on this," Hall said. "I've told our commanders that in my mind, it's the No. 1 quality of life offense in the subway."

Hall says the police started Operation Exposure in 2006, which sends undercover officers into subway cars several times per month to watch for harassment. But city council members suggested more sweeps are needed.
